Estancia Vik José Ignacio

Estancia Vik José Ignacio is a 50,000 square foot Spanish Colonial Style estancia hotel with 12 suites on 4,000 acres of oceanfront rolling land in Jose Ignacio, Uruguay, a vibrant and idyllic coastal area.  Opened in February 2009, Estancia Vik offers the adventure of Uruguay’s traditional ranch experience and the splendor of South America’s finest beaches, amid the comfort and aesthetic magnificence of an incomparable estancia hotel. The guest experience at Estancia Vik is one of the most unique in the world, where “Marlboro Country” meets a laid back St. Tropez. Sister property, Playa Vik, is located on the beach just five miles away and is easily accessible by horseback, bicycle, or motorized vehicles. Estancia Vik is accessible via the Punta del Este airport, which is serviceable by daily flights from airports in Argentina and Brazil. Alternatively, guests may fly to the capital city of Montevideo one and a half hours away.

The Estancia’s private living space is separated into two wings, each containing six luxurious bedroom Suites. Of the six suites in each wing, there are four 500 square-foot Suites on the ground level and two 900 square-foot Master Suites on the second floor. The Suites all feature full bathrooms with separate bath tubs and rain showers, with the Master Suites also including outdoor showers on the patio. Each suite also has private access to the exterior patios surrounding the Estancia.  All twelve private Suites have a unique design and display and integrate original art conceived for each space by leading contemporary Uruguayan artists. Estancia Vik is also available for exclusive use.

The culinary offerings at Estancia Vik celebrate the dishes of Uruguay. Guests will enjoy traditional barbeque, fresh fish and seafood, locally grown fruits and vegetables and homemade breads and pastries all prepared by the property’s talented in-house chef, Marcelo Betancourt. In keeping with local tradition, the Estancia showcases a Uruguayan parillero, or barbeque, with the traditional tin walls and fogon, or central open fire.

On property, guests can horseback ride across open pampas with gauchos, explore wildlife, birds and nature, mountain bike, hike, canoe and fish in the Arroyo de José Ignacio and José Ignacio Lake. Also offered are a variety of water sports, and tennis on Estancia Vik’s grass courts. The south side of the Estancia boasts a large grass covered garden and 20 meter pool made of Absolute Nero stone. The property boasts a gym and spa, plus a private polo field with Criollo riding horses and an adjoining golf green with a wonderful golf practice area. A game room with a pool table, table tennis and a variety of other games are found in the Estancia house. For weddings or special events, there is a romantic chapel nestled in a grove of ancient native trees.

Guess are invited to enjoy sister property, Playa Vik, is just five miles away. The two properties work in tandem, offering a coastal, beachfront experience at Playa Vik and a country ranch retreat in the rolling oceanfront hills of José Ignacio at Estancia Vik. This unique juxtaposition of landscapes was the inspiration behind the two properties, allowing guests to experience the incredible diversity of Uruguay. Playa Vik and Estancia Vik are a celebration of this majestic setting, and provide not only a unique sense of place, but give guests an unparalleled entrée into the culture, art, design and nature of Uruguay.

The artists featured throughout Estancia Vik are celebrated for their vision and individuality. Each has been selected by the retreat’s owners through their involvement with art in Uruguay over many years, and in partnership with Marcelo Daglio and curator Enrique Badaró Nadal. Some highlights include the Estancia’s vast central living room which showcases a 12-foot tall statuary white marble sculpture by world renowned Pablo Atchugarry. The acclaimed Uruguayan sculptor’s creation rises to meet the 300 square meter ceiling and frieze painted by Clever Lara, another leading Uruguayan contemporary artist. Eight very large semi-precious stones in their natural state hang from the walls between sets of glass doors, which the owners discovered in the far north of Uruguay.
